Thomas Smith holds a degree from Temple University's Esther Boyer College of Music where he studied with the late Peter Segal. As a founding member of the Philadelphia Classical Guitar Trio he has recorded, performed in Puerto Rico and Panama and has toured the Mid-Atlantic states as a roster artist for the Pennsylvania Performing Arts On Tour program.

He was a 2009 composition fellow at the Millay Colony for the Arts in Austerlitz, NY. Recent premieres include “The Birds of Winter” for voice, guitar and wind quartet and “Changing Elevations,” a short piece for flutist Mimi Stillman and her ensemble through the American Composers Forum New Voices Program. Spring of 2005 saw the The Philadelphia Classical Guitar Society Orchestra premiere his composition “Three Temperings” at its annual guitar festival in Philadelphia.

Mr. Smith has received an American Composers Forum Subito Grant for a repeat performance of his 1996 composition “The Wolf Roams” for the 2005 Philadelphia Fringe Festival. His “Three Temperings” for guitar orchestra premiered at the Philadelphia Classical Guitar Society Festival by the Guitar Society Orchestra in April, 2005. In September, 2002 his composition “River Rising” was premiered by the Pedrick Hutson guitar duo at the Philly Fringe Festival. The duo has since recorded the piece for their CD “Environs.”

He is a two time awardee of the Community Education Center's Performance In An Intimate Space series where he composed and premiered “Sonata for Guitar & Metal Shop” for guitar and found percussion and “The Wolf Roams” for three guitars. His arrangements of William Grant Still’s “Here's One” and “Danzas de Panama” have been published by the Theodore Presser Company and William Grant Still Music, respectively.

Always interested in the collaborative aspect of different artistic disciplines, he has been commissioned to compose and perform original music for modern dance troupes. His music can also be heard on television as a soundtrack to the environmental awareness show “Leaning Green.” In addition to creating and performing music he is passionate about the art of music engraving. Tom makes his living typesetting or “engraving” music for composers, arrangers and publishers. His most recent project consisted of editing and preparing the score and parts for Margaret Garwood’s full length new opera “The Scarlet Letter.”
